Another full layer is not always the right answer.
Mulch can moderate soil temperature, hold moisture, and reduce weed pressure, but repeated deep layers can create problems. Existing depth should be checked first, and mulch should stay away from direct contact with trunks and the base of woody plants rather than being piled into a mound.
